How I work as a

Therapist

As a Professional Indigenous Counsellor, it is always my intention to "do no harm" and to abide by a strict code of ethics and standards of practice, governed by the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists in Canada. Along with the strict protocols that were passed down from my elder's when working with Indigenous Spiritual Practices & Principles.

Mission

Our wellness center in the Northwest Territories takes a comprehensive approach to healing, with a focus on recognizing and respecting our Ancestral Indigenous Spirituality. We offer clinical and traditional therapeutic practices to empower clients struggling with mental health challenges, stress management, addiction support services, recovery, and aftercare support. Our services are designed to be inclusive of whole family support, and we prioritize building relationships with community health services to provide long-term care for our clients.

Our Home Fire is the center of our well-being, and when we intentionally practice a wrap-around support that is client- centred, we can see long-term success with our clients well-being.

Vision

At Sweetgrass Healing Centre, we offer the ethical practice of indigenous spiritual healing through an integrated approach that fosters a sacred space for clinical counselling and indigenous spiritual teachings to coexist. Our goal is to facilitate healing and wellness for our clients' highest good. We invite clients to join us on this journey towards spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Code of Ethics

CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality is a foundational ethical principle in counselling. Clients need to have confidence that their privacy will be protected and their personal information will be treated with respect.

RELATIONSHIPS

Ethical standards help keep client-counsellor relationships professional and healthy. Self-determination is a basic moral principle in counselling. Counsellors encourage and support clients in making and acting on their own decisions. Your counsellor will use ethical deliberation in deciding when to intervene and when to explain the consequences of going down a certain path. The final decision will be up to you as a client.

PROFESSIONALISM

Ethics offer guidelines for professional behaviour. Counsellors should represent themselves accurately and clearly explain limits of confidentiality, what services they provide and expected fees. Following a code of ethics includes acting honestly as a business person, as well as a counsellor.

Standards of Practice

"The Standards of Practice for ACCT were developed by the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada to give guidance to members in following the ACCT Code of Ethics and conducting themselves in a professional manner.

These standards of practice deal primarily with the professional conduct of counsellors. However, personal conduct of counsellors is also included when it could affect the confidence of the public in the integrity of the profession. Many of the Standards of Practice are general and they cannot predict every situation or ethical challenge, which counsellors may encounter. These Standards of Practice provide a guide, but ultimately the responsibility for ethical behaviour rest with the individual counsellor."

The Standards of Practice are also intended to serve the following purposes:

  • To establish a set of guidelines for quality counselling services;

  • To encourage counsellor accountability;

  • To protect the public by promoting a high standard of competency in counselling;

  • To support the development of counsellors.
